Introducing Our New Barre Series Mixes, powered by DJ Steady & FitRadio
If you’ve been with us since the beginning, you’ll know how much energy our instructors bring into class and how central the music was to that experience. Our instructors are trained to instruct to the beat of the music using anywhere between 130 – 132 beats per minute (BPM). FitRadio is a great resource to our instructors where mixes are curated by fantastic DJs. One name that always stood out? DJ Steady.
The good news? DJ Steady is now collaborating exclusively with Barre Series to create custom mixes — and we couldn’t be more thrilled.
Who Is DJ Steady (aka Steady130)?
- On FitRadio, he goes by Steady130, a longtime favorite in the fitness community.
- Since around 2010, he’s been putting out 60-minute continuous workout mixes across a huge range of genres — pop, EDM, hip-hop, 80s & 90s, you name it.
- He’s deeply embedded in the fitness world. His tracks are used in professional fitness classes, HIIT sessions, and everything in between.
What Makes Our New Mixes Special
- Exclusivity: These mixes are made just for Barre Series. That means they’re not generic and they’re crafted to support the unique structure and moves of barre.
- Tempo-Perfect: These mixes are tempo-ed at approximately 130 BPM, which is ideal for our barre workouts.
- Access: Clients can tap into these mixes through FitRadio (by subscribing), but because they’re tailor-made for Barre Series, you’ll feel the difference!
Understanding BPM (Beats Per Minute)
Let’s break down what BPM is and why it matters, especially in barre.
BPM is a simple way to measure the tempo or speed of a song. If you imagine tapping your foot along to the music, the BPM is the number of taps you’d make in one minute. Slower songs might sit around 70–90 BPM (think mellow or relaxed), while higher-energy tracks for movement usually range between 120–140 BPM.
Why does BPM matter in fitness?
Music isn’t just background noise, it directly influences how your body moves. A steady, predictable tempo helps you:
- Find your rhythm: Your body naturally syncs to the beat, which supports smoother, more coordinated movement.
- Stay motivated: The right tempo lifts your energy without pushing you into overdrive, helping you stay mentally engaged throughout class.
- Maintain form and pacing: When the music supports the pace of the workout, you’re more likely to move with control, avoid rushing, and stay in proper alignment.
- Train more efficiently: Research show that exercising to music with a consistent BPM can improve endurance and support sustainable effort, which is exactly what we build toward in barre.
Why 130 BPM Is Ideal for Barre
- Rhythmic Consistency: At 130 BPM, the beat is steady enough to guide controlled, precise movements, perfect for the small isolated muscle engagements in barre.
- Energy Flow: This tempo strikes a balance: it’s not so slow that the class drags, but not so fast that form or control is compromised. Power Music even notes that 120–140 BPM is a sweet spot for many fitness classes, because it aligns with natural body rhythm and heart rate.
- Psychological Motivation: Music at this tempo can boost motivation while keeping clients in a sustainable, focused zone.
- Safety + Efficiency: Matching movement to tempo helps maintain consistency in pace, which supports alignment and reduces risk of injury. Also, instructors can design choreography that lines up with the beat, so transitions feel intuitive and flow.
