As screen time increases, so does a new form of physical strain: tech neck. Marked by forward-head posture, upper-back rounding, and shoulder tension, this modern condition is rapidly becoming widespread but according to barre and wellness expert Catie Miller, it’s both preventable and reversible.
Through her signature Barre Series method, Catie helps individuals of all ages improve posture, reduce strain, and build long-term strength with a movement approach tailored for modern life.
Tech neck isn’t just a buzzword- it’s the result of hours spent looking down at screens. The good news? Barre is one of the most effective ways to correct it.
Focusing on precise, low-impact movements that prioritise spinal mobility, posture alignment, and deep core engagement. Exercises like chin tucks, wall angels, scapular retractions, and chest openers help undo forward-head posture and restore balance.
Emerging research links prolonged screen use not just to “tech neck,” but also to reduced lung capacity, increased stress on the cervical spine, and even impaired mood regulation due to shortened chest muscles and shallow breathing patterns. By restoring spinal alignment and opening the chest through functional barre movements, participants often experience not only less pain, but also improved breathing, energy, and focus. Barre’s controlled, mindful sequences create a durable foundation for daily life.
Recognising that postural habits and needs evolve over time, Miller has designed her method to serve every age group:
It is especially important to support teens during this transitional time. “Spinal alignment patterns can solidify during adolescence,” Catie explains. “Teaching teens to stack their ears over their shoulders, ribs over hips, and to keep the neck long builds body awareness that extends far beyond the studio.”
With screen time nearly unavoidable, it’s important to have “posture check-ins” throughout the day—especially while seated at desks or using digital devices. Catie encourages setting a timer every 30–45 minutes as a reminder to reset alignment: sit tall, engage the core, drop the shoulders, tuck the chin slightly, and imagine a string gently lifting from the crown of the head.
These micro-adjustments, combined with daily intentional movement, can have a powerful cumulative effect on how we feel and function.
“Often the first signs of tech neck are shoulder tension, chin jutting, and upper-back hunching,” says Catie. “When those show up, it’s time to pause, reconnect with the breath, and activate the deep core. One mindful moment can completely shift your posture—and over time, your body.”
Beyond the physical benefits, many clients describe working with Catie as transformative. Her teaching style blends precision with encouragement, making posture correction feel approachable rather than overwhelming. She has a rare ability to notice subtle misalignments and guide students into simple, effective adjustments that create immediate relief. But what truly sets her apart is the atmosphere she creates: classes feel energising, inclusive, and deeply supportive. Whether in person, online, or at her retreats, Catie’s positive energy leaves people not only standing taller, but also feeling more confident, calm, and connected to themselves.
