October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to educating the public about the disease, supporting those affected, and highlighting the importance of early detection. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers globally, impacting millions of lives. We have gathered key information from Cancer Research UK about breast cancer in this blog alongside information about our breast cancer awareness signature barre class, where all proceeds will be donated. This special class is not just an opportunity to move together but to stand united in recognition of those impacted by breast cancer, promoting strength and resilience. We’re proud to host this event as part of our commitment to raising awareness and contributing to a cause that affects so many lives. For more information, visit Cancer Research UK.
What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is a disease where cells in the breast grow abnormally and can spread to other parts of the body. It most commonly starts in the ducts or lobules. While it primarily affects women, men can also develop breast cancer, though it is much rarer.
Risk factors
Genetics, especially mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2, significantly increase breast cancer risk. Other factors include age, family history, hormone levels, obesity, alcohol consumption, and lifestyle choices. Some risk factors, like genetics, cannot be changed, but lifestyle adjustments can help lower the risk.
Importance of early detection
Early detection is important to improve treatment outcomes and survival rates. Screening methods like mammograms, self-exams, and clinical exams can detect cancer early, when it’s most treatable. Mammograms are especially important as they can find tumours before they are physically noticeable, giving a better chance for less aggressive treatment and higher survival rates.
It is essential to stay vigilant about your breast health by being aware of the common signs and symptoms of breast cancer. These can include:
Lump or thickening in the breast or underarm area: A noticeable lump or area of thickened tissue can be an early indicator of breast cancer. It’s crucial to perform regular self-exams to monitor any changes.
Changes in the size or shape of the breast: Any unexplained alterations in size or shape can be a warning sign that should not be ignored.
Dimpling or puckering of the skin: Changes in the skin’s texture, such as dimpling or puckering, can indicate underlying issues and should be examined by a healthcare professional.
Nipple discharge or inversion: Any unusual discharge from the nipple or changes in the position of the nipple (such as inversion) can also be concerning symptoms.
If you notice any of these signs, it is important to consult a doctor promptly.
Lifestyle choices play a crucial role in maintaining overall health and reducing the risk of breast cancer. Staying active, in particular, can help improve physical and mental well-being while also aiding in weight management and hormonal balance. That’s why we are holding our signature barre class— to encourage our community to engage in physical activity while promoting awareness about breast cancer. This class serves as a reminder of the positive impact that movement can have on our health.
Led by founder of Barre Series, Catie Miller, and hosted by two inspiring women, Carly and Rosamund, who have bravely faced breast cancer. We invite you to join us for 45 minutes of strength, resilience, and community in support of breast cancer awareness, followed by a short meet and greet.
