International Women’s Day is a global observance that celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for gender equality and women’s rights worldwide. The day has its roots in the early 20th century, with the first National Women’s Day organised by the Socialist Party of America on February 28, 1909. It was later proposed to be celebrated annually on March 8th, which eventually became the official date for International Women’s Day.
While International Women’s Day has evolved over the years, its core purpose remains consistent: to highlight the accomplishments of women in various fields, to advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment, and to raise awareness about the challenges and obstacles that women continue to face globally.
International Women’s Day prompts reflection on progress in women’s rights while emphasising the importance of solidarity and support. It’s not just about celebrating achievements; it’s about lifting each other up to ensure every woman can thrive. Whether it’s through mentorship, advocacy, or simply lending a listening ear, our solidarity is our strength. As we honour this day, we embrace self-acceptance, rejecting societal norms and affirming our worth. This day is a reminder to accept ourselves as we are, unapologetically and authentically. Society’s expectations and norms may try to confine us, but International Women’s Day is a testament to our refusal to be constrained by arbitrary standards. We embrace our uniqueness, our flaws, and our complexities, knowing that our worth is not defined by society’s narrow definitions of perfection.
At Barre Series, we empower through wellness, recognising the journey’s challenges and paving the way for growth. Acceptance of our journey is key, inspiring resilience and readiness for future opportunities and obstacles.
Firstly, self-acceptance is a form of self-love and compassion. In a world where women are often bombarded with unrealistic standards of beauty, success, and behaviour, embracing ourselves as we are becomes an act of liberation against societal norms. It allows us to cultivate a sense of worthiness and belonging that is not contingent on external validation.
Secondly, self-acceptance is a catalyst for personal growth and fulfilment. When we embrace our strengths, weaknesses, and unique qualities, we unleash our full potential and pave the way for self-discovery and self-expression. By acknowledging and honouring our authentic selves, we create space for growth, creativity, and fulfilment in all aspects of our lives.
Finally, self-acceptance is a form of resistance against systemic oppression and discrimination. In a world where women are often marginalised, silenced, and objectified, accepting ourselves challenges the narrative of inferiority and reinforces our inherent dignity and worth. It sends a powerful message that we refuse to be defined by society’s narrow standards and will not apologise for who we are.
On International Women’s Day, this message of self-acceptance takes on even greater significance. As we celebrate the achievements and resilience of women around the world, it’s essential to recognise that true empowerment begins from within. By embracing ourselves as whole and worthy beings, we not only honour the women who came before us but also pave the way for a future where every woman can thrive.
In light of International Women’s day, we leave you with two moving pieces of language from the empowering Rupi Kaur:
Proud to be a woman I like the way the stretch marks on my thighs look human and that we’re so soft yet rough and jungle wild when we need to be I love that about us how capable we are of feeling how unafraid we are of breaking and tend to our wounds with grace just being a woman calling myself a woman makes me utterly whole and complete - Rupi Kaur
Being legendary Our work should equip the next generation of women to outdo us in every field this is the legacy we'll leave behind progress - Rupi Kaur
